TSG Hoffenheim are in contact with Sepp van den Berg’s camp as they are interested but have yet to open talks with Liverpool.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Sepp van den Berg continues to attract interest from Bundesliga clubs, with TSG Hoffenheim the latest to enter the race. Liverpool are open to selling him, and FSV Mainz are also keen after a fantastic season on loan at the club last season.
Hoffenheim are keen on Sepp van den Berg
Sepp van den Berg took his chance while on loan last season and has now emerged as one of the hottest defenders in the Bundesliga. The Dutchman has failed to make the grade at Liverpool despite the high hopes placed on him when signing many years ago.
He did hit out at the club for their treatment of him, which has made it clear that there is no place for him in the squad anymore. While Jurgen Klopp has left since, and compatriot Arne Slot has taken over, some might have thought he could have had a chance to shine at Liverpool. But that is not the case anymore.
Liverpool want €20 million for him and are ready to offload, with a host of Bundesliga sides keen. Mainz, where he spent the previous campaign, making 33 league appearances, are interested in re-signing him on a permanent basis. Still, they are not close to paying what the Merseysiders want.
TSG Hoffenheim are the latest Bundesliga side to join the race for the 22-year-old Liverpool prospect, as they have opened talks with the player’s camp. Once they have an agreement in place with the Dutchman, discussions with the Merseysiders should follow. Whether they are open to paying the required asking rate remains the question. But amid growing interest, Liverpool will likely capitalise.
No clear pathway at Liverpool for van den Berg
Sepp van den Berg does have the talent and what it takes to succeed at Liverpool. But off-field issues and a lack of clear pathways could be the reasons for his fallout. The defender has recently found his grounding in Germany and will likely stay there, despite PSV Eindhoven’s interest in bringing him back to the Eredivisie.
Meanwhile, the emergence of Jarell Quansah will have shut the door for the 22-year-old Liverpool prospect at the Merseyside club. His performances for Mainz would have raised some concerns about his future at Anfield. But Quansah is the clear candidate to be a part of their defence in the upcoming season.
