West Ham United will not sign Jonathan David in the summer transfer window due to his agent’s excessive commission of £10 million.
According to a report by The Sun, Jonathan David is the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers have been ready to cough up £30 million to sign the LOSC Lille striker in the summer transfer window. However, the Canadian international’s agent’s commission worth £10 million has compelled them to pull out from the race while clearing the route for Chelsea and Newcastle United.
The rise and rise of Jonathan David
Jonathan David has been one of the best strikers in Ligue 1 since joining LOSC Lille from KAA Gent in August 2020. The 24-year-old has gone from strength to strength in the last four years, with Les Dogues’ fortunes often depending on how he fares in the final third.
The Canadian international was top-notch in the 2023/24 season, amassing 26 goals and nine assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. However, David faces an uncertain future at LOSC Lille after entering the final 12 months of his contract. The situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Chelsea, Newcastle United, and West Ham United.
A man in demand
Chelsea will look to sign another striker in the summer transfer window despite landing Marc Guiu. The former Barcelona wonderkid is in the early days of his professional career. So, securing the services of a more experienced centre-forward is sensible, bringing David into the picture.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United’s interest in Jonathan David is understandable. The Magpies are scouring the market for a striker amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Callum Wilson. The LOSC Lille attacker is thus a viable target for Newcastle United, with his price tag of £30 million making him an attractive option.
As for West Ham, they want an upgrade on Michail Antonio and Danny Ings in the summer transfer window. David thus emerged as an option worth considering, with West Ham ready to cough up £30 million to secure his services. However, the Canadian striker’s agent wants a commission of £10 million.
That has compelled the Hammers to end their interest in the 24-year-old and walk away from the deal to sign him from LOSC Lille. So, with West Ham no longer in the chase, Chelsea and Newcastle United should have a clearer run at David.
