Aston Villa in transfer tussle to sign Lorenz Assignon

Aston Villa will reportedly look to sign 24-year-old French full-back Lorenz Assignon from Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Lorenz Assignon is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are scouring the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Matty Cash. Meanwhile, Stade Rennais will demand around €10 million to part ways with the 24-year-old full-back.

Who is Lorenz Assignon?

Lorenz Assignon has seen his stock rise after a solid second half of the 2023/24 campaign with Burnley. While the Clarets went down to the EFL Championship, the Frenchman was one of the bright spots and made his mark with his exploits from the right flank.

A native of Grasse, the 24-year-old graduated from the youth division at Stade Rennais before breaking into the first-team squad midway through the 2020/21 season. However, Assignon was never the undisputed first-choice right-back for the Ligue 1 outfit, with his spell at Burnley helping him become sought-after in the market.

The French full-back turned out only 15 times for Burnley but chipped in with one goal and two assists. Meanwhile, Lorenz Assignon’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Recent reports have linked him with AS Roma. However, Aston Villa will look to win the race to sign him, with Rennes demanding around €10 million.

Premier League return on the cards?

Aston Villa’s interest in Lorenz Assignon is understandable. The Villans have been scouring the market for a right-back heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Matty Cash. With Aston Villa ready to entertain offers to sell Cash, they need a replacement.

So, several right-backs, including Saud Abdulhamid, have emerged on Aston Villa’s radar. However, Assignon is also a viable target for the West Midlands outfit, with his Premier League experience and a meagre price tag of €10 million making him an attractive option.

With AS Roma also in the equation, Aston Villa must step up to seal the deal to secure Lorenz Assignon’s signature. However, the Villans can offer UEFA Champions League football, which can turn the tide in the Midlands club’s favour.
