Galatasaray eyeing Djed Spence swoop

UEFA Champions League regulars and Turkish champions Galatasaray are reportedly interested in signing 23-year-old Tottenham outcast Djed Spence this summer.

According to a report by Turkish outlet GS Gazete, Djed Spence is the subject of interest from Galatasaray. The Turkish champions are scouring the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window after parting ways with Serge Aurier. So, the UEFA Champions League regulars are looking to sign the 23-year-old out-of-favour wide man from Tottenham Hotspur.

Djed Spence and his Tottenham travails

Djed Spence has failed to establish a foothold in the first-team squad at Tottenham Hotspur since arriving from Middlesbrough in July 2022. The Englishman was a highly sought-after full-back after a solid 2021/22 campaign on loan at Nottingham Forest, helping the Tricky Trees return to the Premier League.

The 23-year-old could not win over Antonio Conte after joining Tottenham, and the North London club sent him out on loan to Stade Rennais in the second half of the 2022/23 season. Two more loan spells followed in the 2023/24 campaign, and Spence made his mark for Genoa in the first six months of 2024.

However, after turning out only half a dozen times thus far for Tottenham and amassing just 43 minutes of game time, Djed Spence’s ill-fated spell with the North London club will likely end in the summer transfer window. Recent reports have linked him with a return to Genoa, but a move has not materialised. The latest update has linked the English full-back with Galatasaray.

Turkish move on the horizon?

Galatasaray’s interest in Djed Spence is understandable. The Turkish giants have been scouring the market for a right-back heading into the summer transfer window after parting ways with Serge Aurier as a free agent. So, several candidates, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, have emerged on Galatasaray’s radar.

The UEFA Champions League regulars have now set their sights on Spence, with the 23-year-old English full-back being a viable target for them. Meanwhile, Tottenham will likely sanction another loan departure for the out-of-favour full-back in the summer transfer window.

It will be interesting to see if Galatasaray’s first offer to secure Djed Spence’s services does the trick. With Tottenham open to parting ways with the Englishman on another loan deal, an agreement might see the light of day.
