Bayern Munich have turned down a bid from Manchester United for Matthijs de Ligt, with the Bavarians demanding €50 million plus add-ons.
According to Christian Falk, Bayern Munich have turned down a €35 million bid from Manchester United for defender Matthijs de Ligt. Erik ten Hag is still keen on the former Ajax star despite the signing of Leny Yoro, as it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils return with an offer.
Manchester United fail with Matthijs de Ligt bid
Manchester United have been busy in the transfer market. They have already brought in two important players and are on the verge of signing more. Erik ten Hag may have stepped away from transfer scouting and other associated work, but he seems to be getting the players who fit in with the system well.
The signing of Leny Yoro from LOSC Lille is seen as a crucial addition to their defence, but they might angle a move for a more senior centre-back. Matthijs de Ligt was on their radar before they entered the Yoro chase and remains a firm target, although Manchester United may have to sell before they can sign the Dutchman.
They have already splashed out on two big signings and are probably angling for a third with Manuel Ugarte. However, the claim that they need to sell before buying De Ligt may need more investigation. They launched a €35 million bid to sign the 24-year-old Bundesliga star and failed, as Bayern Munich rejected the proposal.
Bayern Munich reportedly want at least €50 million in fixed fees and add-ons on top to accept De Ligt’s departure. Whether Manchester United are willing to go higher and come close to that valuation remains to be seen, although they reportedly have an agreement on personal terms with De Ligt.
Bayern Munich keen to raise funds
Like Manchester United, Bayern Munich have been very active in the transfer window, making at least two big signings in Michael Olise and Joao Palhinha. They might have received some funds in the Zirkzee sale owing to a sell-on clause in his Bologna contract, although they still need to raise significant funds to make new signings from here on.
Hence, they are refusing to take a massive hit with the De Ligt sale, a player they paid over €67 million to sign two years ago. On paper, their demands for the 24-year-old Bundesliga star seem justified, as time will tell whether Manchester United come close to their valuation of the Dutch defender.
