Andriy Lunin linked with Chelsea, Fabrizio Romano denies move

Alberto Pereiro has suggested that Andriy Lunin is closing in on joining Chelsea from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, while Fabrizio Romano has denied the rumour.

According to Spanish journalist Alberto Pereiro on Onda Cero, Andriy Lunin is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are scouring the market for a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. And Pereiro has suggested that they are closing in on securing the services of the Real Madrid goalkeeper.

However, reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has quashed suggestions that Lunin is close to joining Chelsea in the summer transfer window. He has claimed that the Merengues have not received any approach from the West London club, with Kepa Arrizabalaga the only goalkeeper in discussion.

The Andriy Lunin tale

Andriy Lunin has resurrected his stuttering career after his breakthrough campaign at Real Madrid. The Ukrainian international grew in frustrations in the first half-decade at the Santiago Bernabeu after failing to establish a foothold in the first-team squad at Real Madrid.

However, untimely injuries to Thibaut Courtois and Kepa Arrizabalaga helped his case, and he did not look back. The 25-year-old amassed nearly 3,000 minutes of game time across 31 outings in all competitions while keeping 12 clean sheets and conceding 32 goals. Lunin was instrumental in Real Madrid winning the UEFA Champions League and La Liga, although he did not play in the UCL final.

However, Andriy Lunin faces an uncertain future at Real Madrid in the summer transfer window, with Courtois fit and raring to go. So, while Los Blancos would prefer to tie the Ukrainian shot-stopper to a new contract, he might consider embarking on a new adventure. Such a situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Chelsea.

London calling?

Chelsea’s interest in Lunin is understandable, considering Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic have failed to be convincing enough to be the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper. In addition, Kepa Arrizabalaga does not have a long-term future at Stamford Bridge. So, Lunin is a viable target for Chelsea.

However, it will be interesting to see if the Blues seal the deal to secure Andriy Lunin’s services or if Fabrizio Romano is correct in his assessment of the situation. Meanwhile, other top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester City, are also interested in the Real Madrid goalkeeper.
