Premier League heavyweights Chelsea have reportedly revived their interest in 21-year-old French striker Elye Wahi, submitting an enquiry to sign him from RC Lens.
According to a report by French outlet L’Equipe, Elye Wahi is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues were keen on signing the 21-year-old striker in last summer’s transfer window before he joined RC Lens from Montpellier. However, they have rekindled their move while submitting an enquiry to ask for information about a possible deal this year.
Who is Elye Wahi?
Elye Wahi has made reasonable progress since joining RC Lens from Montpellier last summer. A native of Courcouronnes, the Frenchman spent his formative years with four clubs and graduated from the youth division at Montpellier HSC a few years ago.
Wahi’s stock rose after the 2022/23 season, as he was one of the most productive attackers in Ligue 1 and nearly breached the 20-goal mark in the top flight. While the 21-year-old was not as prolific for RC Lens last term, he managed a decent tally of 12 goals and four assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.
However, the French striker faces an uncertain future at Stade Bollaert-Delelis midway through the summer transfer window. But Elye Wahi’s stock in the market remains high, with Chelsea interested in signing him in the summer transfer window, having enquired about him in recent days.
A year later, London calling?
Chelsea’s interest in Elye Wahi is understandable. The Blues were keen on signing the youngster last year before RC Lens swooped in and secure his services. Meanwhile, they have been keen on signing a striker heading into the summer transfer window after Nicolas Jackson blew hot and cold in the 2023/24 season.
So, several candidates, including Jhon Duran, have emerged on Chelsea’s radar. However, Wahi is also a viable target, with the West London club already submitting an enquiry for him, asking for information about the 21-year-old French striker.
With RC Lens open to a summer sale, the Blues will fancy their chances of securing the services of the young striker. It will be interesting to see if a belated move to Chelsea sees the light of day for the Frenchman in the coming weeks.
