Newcastle United have made ambitious enquiries about Xavi Simons. Bundesliga pair RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich are current favourites.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United have sounded out about a move for Xavi Simons, making soft enquiries for the PSG playmaker. The 21-year-old Dutchman has seen his stock rise drastically in the last 12 months or so and remains eager to depart the Parisians, with Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig considered the favourites.
Newcastle United made Xavi Simons enquiry
Newcastle United may have manoeuvred through a difficult period to raise funds through player sales and comply with PSR obligations, as they will now test the market to improve their squad. Eddie Howe wants some key signings ahead of the new season, although there are doubts whether they are in a position to pay big.
Moreover, they could not repeat the trick of qualifying for the Champions League, which would further reduce their earnings. The lack of top-tier European football may cost them the chance to sign top talents, including PSG playmaker Xavi Simons.
With a sensational season on loan with RB Leipzig, where Simons contributed 25 goals and assists combined, he has decided to leave the Parisians this summer. Despite claims that PSG wants over £70 million, the report insists they will sell the 21-year-old Dutchman for around £52 million, as it remains to be seen whether Newcastle United will get any favourable response from the player’s camp.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano confirmed Newcastle United’s interest. Without any surprise, the Italian transfer guru insisted the Magpies were not the favourites in the race even if they had the financial means, naming Leipzig and Bayern Munich as the front runners to sign the playmaker.
Romano said, “Let me tell you that another club that asked for example for information on Xavi Simons was Newcastle to understand the situation of the player, but again, it was few days ago, not months ago,”
“And this is why Leipzig and Bayern remain the two favourites.”
Leipzig or Bayern for Simons
Barcelona was considered Simons’ favourite side to join should he depart PSG. With the Catalans not likely to pay what’s necessary, Bundesliga pair Leipzig and Bayern may have taken advantage of the situationsituation and positioned themselves as the favourites.
Simons already knows the Leipzig system and might prefer to stay here, mainly because they are in the Champions League. However, the chance to join Bayern and play alongside the likes of Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala and new arrival Michael Olise might be an interesting choice from the Dutchman, as much will depend on which team can fork out the money PSG wants for the player.
