Mason Greenwood closing in on joining Napoli after Marseille move collapses

Napoli are closing on the signature of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood after his move to Marseille collapsed.

According to SportMediaset via Calcio Napoli 24, Napoli are pushing hard to complete a surprise move for the services of Mason Greenwood. The Serie A giants are close to striking a deal with Manchester United for the young attacker after his move to French club Marseille stalled.

Greenwood has revived his career with an impressive loan spell at Getafe where he contributed towards 16 goals (10 goals, 6 assists) in his 36 outings. While Manchester United did consider the idea of reinstating him in the team, they seem to have decided against it and are looking to cash in on the 22-year-old with his contract running out in 12 months.

With multiple top clubs from across Europe keen on Greenwood’s signature, the Red Devils are looking to raise a significant amount from his departure. Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille are looking to reinforce their attack, and they have been interested in the English attacker for weeks.

While the French giants did table a bid for the youngster, the move has stalled following the words of the city’s mayor Benoit Payan on the player’s past. The player seems to be intimidated by the fans; reaction, which might be a big reason why the talks have slowed down.

Napoli all set to sign Greenwood?

It has allowed other interested clubs to hijack the deal. While Lazio are working hard to secure an agreement for the player, it seems rivals Napoli have taken centre stage in the transfer saga. The Serie A giants, who won the Scudetto in the 2022/23 season, are closing in on a surprise move for the star forward, who could be a great addition to their squad.

With Victor Osimhen’s future at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadiuam uncertain, Greenwood could be an ideal signing for them even though he is not a like-for-like replacement. The club’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis is pushing hard to bring the 22-year-old to the club amidst interest from quite a few clubs.

They have already reached a basic agreement with the Red Devils on a transfer that will cost €30 million. Napoli’s offer means they are just one step away from securing his services, and it is well beyond what Marseille had put forward. They were ready to offer €20 million plus bonuses along with 50% of his future resale. The next few days could be very crucial in deciding where Greenwood will play next season.
