Manchester United secure agreement in principle to sign Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United have an agreement in principle with Bologna for the services of Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Joshua Zirkzee is all set to join Manchester United ahead of next season. The Red Devils have been in talks with Bologna for a while and they have finally had a big breakthrough as they have agreed basic terms for his transfer.

Zirkzee came up the ranks at Bayern Munich and did manage to break into their first team. But, in search of regular first-team action, he parted ways with the German giants and ended up joining Bologna back in 2022.

The move to Italy seems to have done wonders for the Dutch striker. While his debut season wasn’t that great, the 23-year-old found the back of the net on 12 occasions and even bagged seven assists in 37 outings last season.

His impressive performances even helped him secure a place in the Dutch squad for Euro 2024. While he hardly played a part at the continental tournament, his performances for Bologna haven’t gone unnoticed and multiple clubs are interested in signing him.

But, it seems Manchester United are on the verge of completing his signing. The Red Devils are keen on adding another striker to the mix. They want someone who can support Rasmus Hojlund up top and feel Zirkzee could be a great long-term recruitment.

United have been in talks with Bologna for some time now and both clubs finally managed to reach an agreement in principle regarding the transfer last night. The Manchester-based club have agreed to pay the €40 million release clause for the services of the young forward.

While they have taken a significant step towards his recruitment, the last details on payment terms are yet to be clarified. Nothing has been signed yet and a medical is not yet on the cards. However, he is expected to pen down a five-year deal with an option of another 12 months. The player has been on the top of United’s wishlist for weeks, if things go according to plan he could soon be a United player.
