Mason Greenwood move to Marseille stalls, Lazio given lifeline

Lazio still have a chance to secure the services of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood as his move to Marseille has stalled.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Mason Greenwood’s move to Marseille has stalled following the statement by Benoit Payan, the mayor of Marseille. With a move to the Ligue 1 club now on hold, Lazio have the perfect opportunity to win the race for his signature.

Greenwood made a return to football with a loan move to Getafe last season. The 22-year-old had an impressive season with the Spanish club as he scored 10 goals and bagged six assists in his 36 outings. While he is back at his parent club, the English winger does not have a future at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are ready to cash in on him with his contract running out in 12 months. They want a reasonable fee for their academy graduate along with a percentage of his future sale. While multiple top clubs have been linked with him, Lazio and Marseille have been the most serious candidates for his signature.

The Serie A club were in pole position to sign him, but the difference in valuation of Manchester United and Lazio allowed Marseille the opportunity to strike a deal with the Red Devils. The Ligue 1 outfit managed to agree terms with the Red Devils. They needed the green light from the player for the move to be complete.

Talks between Marseille and Greenwood on hold

Unfortunately, talks between the two parties have been on hold of late. The operation to bring him to the club has slowed down following the words of the mayor of the French city about the past affairs of the player. The Ligue 1 club remain interested in Greenwood’s services; they want to sign him irrespective of what Benoit Payan thinks about the transfer and have been trying to convince the player.

There have been calls and meetings with the player’s father as they look to make it clear that they are willing to go ahead with the move having already agreed terms with Manchester United.

But, the reaction of the fans seems to have intimidated the player and now Lazio have the perfect opportunity to sign him. The Serie A giants can overtake Marseille in the pursuit and close the deal by satisfying Manchester United and convincing the player about their project being the ideal destination for him to resume his career.
