Ligue 1 giants Marseille are reportedly interested in signing Arsenal’s 25-year-old homegrown player Eddie Nketiah in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Eddie Nketiah is the subject of interest from Marseille. The Ligue 1 giants are keen on signing another striker in the summer transfer window despite closing in on landing Mason Greenwood from Manchester United. And they have already contacted the representatives of the 25-year-old Arsenal attacker.
Eddie Nketiah and his Arsenal journey
Eddie Nketiah has struggled to establish himself as a first-choice starter for Arsenal since breaking into the first-team squad at the North London club. A native of Lewisham, the Englishman began his youth career at Chelsea and spent eight years at the West London club before joining Arsenal in 2015.
The 25-year-old did not take long to break into the first-team squad at Arsenal and made his senior bow as an 18-year-old in September 2017. Since then, Nketiah has made gradual progress at the Emirates, only featuring regularly for the North London club in the last two seasons.
The English striker has turned out over 150 times thus far for Arsenal while chipping in with 38 goals and seven assists. However, despite struggling for regular starts at Arsenal, Eddie Nketiah’s stock in the market remains high. Several Premier League outfits are keen on signing the homegrown attacker, with the latest club to show interest in him being Marseille.
Ligue 1 move on the horizon?
Marseille’s interest in Eddie Nketiah is understandable. While recent reports have claimed that the Ligue 1 giants are closing in on signing Mason Greenwood from Manchester United, the latest updates have suggested that the move has hit a snag. However, Foot Mercato has pointed to the Arsenal attacker being an additional target to Greenwood.
With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the final phase of his career, it behoves Marseille to sign two young strikers. Nketiah is thus a viable target for Les Phoceens, with the Ligue 1 club contacting his representatives.
Arsenal will demand a significant sum to part ways with Nketiah in the summer transfer window. That might pose a problem for Marseille, and it will be interesting to see if they can land the 25-year-old homegrown player in the coming weeks.
