Mason Greenwood close to joining Marseille, Lazio move hijacked

Marseille appears closer to signing Mason Greenwood than Lazio, as the French club is about to complete a hijack for the Manchester United forward.

According to Football Insider, Marseille is set to hijack MLazio’s pursuit of Mason Greenwood. The impasse between the Italian side and Manchester United gave the French side a window of opportunity. The controversial forward is coveted by both sides, although Roberto De Zerbi’s club are the favourites.

Marseille are closing in on Mason Greenwood

Manchester United took a big risk with Mason Greenwood last summer when he was cleared of all charges. Fans called for the homegrown forward to be expelled and his contract terminated for good when it appeared the club might integrate him back. Instead, the Red Devils chose a loan option and offloaded him to Getafe, where he had a successful comeback season.

Manchester United has been keen on selling Greenwood ahead of pre-season, and while some clubs have backed away from the chase, there are two surprise contenders for his signature. Despite Greenwood’s controversial background, the Red Devils have taken advantage of the market situation by slapping a £40 million price tag on him.

Lazio had plans to make an offer, and the report suggests they have made a £30 million bid. Manchester United’s valuation for the £40 million-rated forward meant Marseille had a window of opportunity to make their mark, as France’s solitary UCL winners are now looking like the favourites to land him.

They have made a contract offer to Greenwood and believe they have their man, as Marseille may have made a bid to Manchester United. Their valuation remains under wraps, but it could be well over what Lazio offered, as the Ligue 1 giants may have successfully hijacked their bid.

Manchester United to use Greenwood funds on new players

The sale of Greenwood, especially if it is for £40 million, would enable Manchester United to make a total profit from the homegrown star. They have already shown signs of using the incoming money on new additions, as a bid for about a similar price went in for Leny Yoro today.

The Red Devils are keen on adding to their defence, as a move for Matthijs de Ligt seems close and should be concluded after the Euros. Manchester United has also decided to trigger Joshua Zirkzee’s release clause, which is about £40 million, and signing him from Bologna. They will later focus on bringing midfielders and possibly a wide forward to improve Erik ten Hag’s squad.
