Arsenal fail with bid to re-sign Dan Bentley

Arsenal have reportedly failed in their bid for 30-year-old Wolves goalkeeper Dan Bentley, with the offer deemed insufficient.

According to an update by David Ornstein on The Athletic, Arsenal have seen a bid rejected for Dan Bentley, with Wolves deeming the offer to be insufficient. The Gunners are keen on re-signing the 30-year-old former academy ace as a backup option to David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale, as well as boost their homegrown quota.

Arsenal fail with Dan Bentley bid

Arsenal are in the market to strengthen their goalkeeping ranks ahead of the new season, with Mikel Arteta particularly looking at a third-choice stopper. The Gunners are also keen on a homegrown player while they are at it, as some of their first-team academy stars are likely to depart in the summer.

They have recently shown interest in Dan Bentley and want to bring the 30-year-old former academy ace back to the club. The Wolves stopper left Arsenal around 15 years ago without making a first-team appearance but has since gone on to play more than 430 senior games, mainly in the EFL Championship.

Arsenal contacted Wolves and made a thorough enquiry, only to follow up with an offer. The Midlands side have reportedly turned down their bid for Bentley, which other sources are reporting to be around £50,000. On paper, this may seem like a lowball offer, but it is very similar to what Wolves paid for him 18 months ago.

The Gunners are expected to return with a new bid, considering Wolves found it extremely insufficient, as they are keen to re-invest a certain sum into buying a replacement. How much the Black Country outfit want remains the question, although going by Arsenal’s opening offer, they are not keen to spend significantly on a third-choice keeper.

Bentley not Ramsdale’s replacement

Ramsdale is widely expected to leave Arsenal, as a goalkeeper of his level would not want another season on the bench. The Gunners reportedly want £50 million, which has effectively shrunk his options in the market, although the current window is still in its infancy.

The approach for Bentley is only to sign a third-choice stopper rather than replace Ramsdale. Arteta does not view the 30-year-old former Arsenal academy ace as someone to deputise for David Raya, as the Gunners will enter a different market for a Ramsdale replacement if at all it comes to that.
