Liverpool prepared to cough up €45 million to sign Odilon Kossounou

Liverpool are considering paying a hefty fee for Odilon Kossounou in this window, with Bayer Leverkusen prepared to sell the defender.

According to Fichajes, Liverpool are showing positive signs of paying a €45 million fee to sign Odilon Kossounou. Bayer Leverkusen would ideally love to keep the Ivorian defender, but his diminishing contract could see the Bundesliga champions cash in on the 23-year-old centre-back.

Liverpool in Odilon Kossounou chase

Xabi Alonso utilised his options in defence very well on the road to winning the Bundesliga and reaching the Europa League final. The game time for some of his defenders has really caught the eye, with his constant rotations giving ample chances to all of his key defenders, including Odilon Kossounou.

Having made 22 Bundesliga appearances on the road to lifting the title for the first time in Leverkusen’s history, Kossounou might be heading out of the club for a new challenge. A host of Premier League sides have constantly kept tabs, including Manchester United, who have monitored him since January.

Newcastle United are also keen, and so are Liverpool, who were poised for talks since the end of last season. The Magpies are among the teams keeping close tabs, although the Merseysiders are visibly ahead in the race for the 23-year-old Kossounou.

Liverpool is reportedly prepared to shell out the €45 million required to convince Bayer Leverkusen to sell the 23-year-old Ivorian defender. With two years left on his deal, this might probably be the best time for the Bundesliga champions to cash in or risk diminishing his value, especially if Premier League interest gathers pace over the course of next season.

Liverpool are planning defensive additions

Liverpool are not about to sit idle and continue with last season’s defensive setup, as new boss Arne Slot eyes new additions. Irrespective of what transpires for Virgil van Dijk’s future, a new left-sided centre-back remains a priority, while also adding someone like Kossounou, who likes to feature on the right side.

There could also be new full-back additions this summer, although that area may not be seen as urgent as adding one or two central defenders. With Joel Matip gone, there’s a big need to replace the Cameroonian, with Kossounou likely to be that man.
