Newcastle United touch base with AC Milan for Malick Thiaw

Newcastle United recently contacted Serie A giants AC Milan to ask for information about Malick Thiaw, who will cost around €35-40 million.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Malick Thiaw is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are scouring the market for another centre-back despite completing a Bosman move for Lloyd Kelly. They have thus enquired about the AC Milan central defender, with the Serie A giants demanding around €35-40 million to sell him in the summer transfer window.

Malick Thiaw and his AC Milan journey

Malick Thiaw has not progressed as well as he would have liked since joining Newcastle United from AC Milan in August 2022. The 22-year-old was one of the best young defensive prospects in the world during his time in Germany, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe.

AC Milan won the race to sign the German defender two years ago, and the youngster has made gradual progress at the Serie A club in the last two seasons. Thiaw has turned out 54 times thus far for the Rossoneri, chipping in with one assist. However, despite blowing hot and cold, the player’s stock remains high.

The former Schalke defender has piqued the attention of high-profile clubs like Real Madrid in the last 12 months. However, a move to the Premier League might be on the cards, with Newcastle United among his prospective suitors heading into the summer transfer window. In addition, Thiaw is keen on moving to the Premier League when he leaves AC Milan.

Premier League adventure on the horizon?

Newcastle United’s interest in Malick Thiaw is understandable. The Magpies have been scouring the market for another centre-back heading into the summer transfer window despite signing Lloyd Kelly on a Bosman move. That stance is understandable, considering Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are long-term absentees due to their respective knee injuries.

In addition, Lascelles, Fabian Schar, and Dan Burn are on the wrong side of 30. Thiaw has thus emerged as a viable target for Newcastle United, with the Tyneside outfit contacting AC Milan to enquire about the 22-year-old. Meanwhile, the Serie A giants want around €35-40 million to part ways with him in the summer transfer window.

While €35-40 million might be a steep price, Newcastle United should have the financial bandwidth to sign him. However, it will be interesting to see if the Magpies step up their interest after enquiring about the German defender.
