Newcastle United confident of keeping Anthony Gordon amid Liverpool links

Newcastle United are reportedly optimistic of keeping hold of 23-year-old English international Anthony Gordon, a target for Liverpool.

According to a report by Football Insider, Anthony Gordon is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds have been keen on signing the 23-year-old from Newcastle United in the summer transfer window. However, the Magpies do not want to sell the youngster and are confident of keeping hold of him.

The rise of Anthony Gordon at Newcastle United

Anthony Gordon has established himself as a pivotal figure for Newcastle United since arriving from Everton in January 2023. The Englishman was among the most highly-rated prospects in the country when he forced a move to St. James’ Park 18 months ago. And the transfer has done wonders for his career thus far.

The 23-year-old gradually grew in prominence in the second half of the 2022/23 season but was excellent throughout the 2023/24 campaign, where he became a productive attacker. Gordon contributed to 23 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions by finding the back of the net 12 times while providing 11 assists.

Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon’s progress at Newcastle United has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile Premier League clubs. Liverpool, in particular, will try to re-sign the English international in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool interested

Liverpool’s interest in Anthony Gordon is understandable. The Reds are sweating over the long-term futures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, with both players linked with summer moves away from Anfield. So, they have been scouring the market for a wide attacker heading into the summer transfer window.

Gordon, who spent some of his formative years with Liverpool, has thus emerged as a viable target for the Merseyside outfit. Recent reports have also claimed that Liverpool’s interest has turned the Englishman’s head and that he might push for a move to Anfield. However, Newcastle United will not entertain offers to part ways with the 23-year-old in the summer transfer window.

The latest update has suggested that the Magpies are growing in confidence as they look to keep the English international at St. James’ Park beyond the summer transfer window. Newcastle United recently sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to alleviate the risk of flouting the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. So, they might not need to offload Gordon to balance the books.
