Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are interested in acquiring the services of Bologna defensive sensation Riccardo Calafiori.
Arsenal are looking at ways to further bolster their squad as they look to end their wait for the Premier League title. They want to reinforce their backline this summer and according to Gianluca DiMarzio, the North London club are interested in the versatile Italian defensive sensation Riccardo Calafiori.
The 22-year-old defender has had quite a rise since parting ways with his childhood club AS Roma to join FC Basel in the summer of 2022. He had an exceptional season with the Swiss outfit which led to his return to the Serie A with a move to Bologna last summer.
In his debut season with them, the left-footed centre-half was involved in 33 outings and he even contributed towards seven goals. While the majority of the appearances came in the heart of the defence, he also featured as a left-sided full-back when needed.
He has further enhanced his reputation with his performances for Italy at Euro 2024. Multiple top clubs are closely following the 22-year-old and they are gearing up to make a move for him in the near future.
Arsenal keen on Calafiori’s services
While there is interest in him from multiple top clubs across Europe, DiMarzio believes Arsenal’s interest is the most concrete amongst clubs from outside of Italy. The Gunners have been closely monitoring the Italian international and they are looking to strike a deal with Bologna for his signature.
Mikel Arteta already has a lot of quality in the backline but he still wants more depth in the heart of defence and another left-back option. As a result, Calafiori could be a great fit for him as he can play in both positions. Bologna’s technical director Sartori has recently talked about their defensive stars’ future.
They will try their best to keep him in their squad but if important offers arrive, they will cashing in on him. He feels a move to rivals Juventus is unlikely and the Italian defender could be headed to a different market.
The market for him could be the Premier League as Arsenal push hard for his signature. With the player keen on continuing his development in Italy, the Gunners might have to convince him about a move to North London.
