Manchester United in talks to sign Matthijs de Ligt, make contract offer

Manchester United have made a contract proposal for Matthijs de Ligt to consider, as discussions with Bayern Munich to follow.

According to Dutch outlet Telegraaf, Manchester United have tabled a five-year deal for 24-year-old defensive target Matthijs de Ligt. The Netherlands international wants a way out of Bayern Munich, although the Red Devils have yet to discuss terms with the Bundesliga giants.

Manchester United make Matthijs de Ligt contract offer

Erik ten Hag wants INOES to bring him a central defensive option on priority as a replacement for Raphael Varane. The club did not trigger the extension option in the Frenchman’s contract, which has left an enormous void to fill at the back. Matthijs de Ligt is a big target for the Red Devils, although they are also dreaming about Leny Yoro as an option

As for De Ligt, the 24-year-old has already decided to leave Bayern Munich in the summer, having lost his status as an undisputed starter last season. The likelihood of the Dutchman re-claiming his place is remote, and he’s aware of the growing interest from his former boss, Ten Hag, who remains keen on a reunion with the former Ajax star.

Manchester United had touched base with De Ligt’s camp of late, and now they have made a contract proposal for the 24-year-old defensive target to consider. The report states the Red Devils have tabled a five-year deal, although the wages on offer are unclear at this stage.

De Ligt might be eager on the move, as the lure of playing again for Ten Hag might be a big factor for the Dutch international. However, things will depend on the final fee that Bayern Munich will ask for the player, for whom they paid €67 million to Juventus.

Manchester United and Bayern Munich will discuss De Ligt’s move

Manchester United’s approach involves first finding an agreement with De Ligt on personal terms and then holding talks with Bayern Munich. The Bavarians will surely ask for a significant fee, either more than what they paid or at least close to that sum.

Manchester United will cite the player’s lack of minutes, which has subsequently cost him a starting berth for the Netherlands at the Euros. The Red Devils might use those factors as a base to reduce Bayern’s potential asking price, as a transfer might be on the cards for the 24-year-old.
