Tottenham set to complete Archie Gray swoop

Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United reportedly have an agreement in principle over a deal worth £40 million for 18-year-old utility man Archie Gray.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Archie Gray has been the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The 18-year-old Leeds United utility man was close to sealing a move to Brentford. However, the North London giants have hijacked the deal and will pay £40 million to the Whites for the teenage sensation.

The rapid rise of Archie Gray

Archie Gray has established himself as one of the brightes young prospects in the country in the last few years. A native of Durham, he has been eligible to represent England and Scotland internationally but has chosen the former as his national side.

Meanwhile, the 18-year-old has risen in prominence due to his ability to play as a right-back and a midfielder equally adeptly. Gray was an ever-present for Leeds United in the 2023/24 season, amassing over 4,000 minutes of game time across 52 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with two assists.

Gray’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing the England youth international, while recent reports claimed he was close to joining Brentford. However, Tottenham swooped in in the last 24 hours, hijacking the move.

London calling

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Archie Gray is understandable. The North London giants have scoured the market for a right-back and a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. Emerson Royal and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg face an uncertain future, compelling Tottenham to invest in a right-back and a midfielder.

Gray can be a one-stop solution for Tottenham, considering he can reprise both positions. So, it is hardly surprising that the North London giants have stepped up their interest, hijacking Brentford’s move for the 18-year-old Leeds United utility man by sealing an agreement in principle.

Tottenham will pay £40 million to Leeds United, with Gray signing a long-term contract with the club. So, with a deal worth £40 million on the verge of completion, it will be interesting to see who emerges as the top alternative to Gray for Brentford.
