Newcastle United rival Everton in Arthur Melo chase

Newcastle United are reportedly competing with Everton to sign 27-year-old former Barcelona midfielder Arthur Melo from Juventus.

According to a report by Italian outlet Tuttosport, Arthur Melo is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are scouring the market for a midfielder in the summer transfer window, with the 27-year-old Juventus outcast emerging as a viable target. Meanwhile, the former Barcelona midfielder is also a target for Everton.

Arthur Melo and his struggles in the last few years

Arthur Melo has seen his career spiral out of control in the last few years. The Brazilian midfielder was on top of the world after joining Barcelona from Gremio and made his mark at the Catalan club for some time. However, the good feeling soon dissipated, and Barcelona sold him to Juventus in one of the worst “swaps” in history.

The 27-year-old failed to hit the ground running at Juventus, and he moved to Liverpool on loan after two years of struggle at the Allianz Stadium. That spell did not work out, and the player returned to Juventus after barely featuring for the Merseyside club. Arthur’s next challenge came at Fiorentina in the 2023/24 season.

The former Barcelona midfielder was a regular for Fiorentina, amassing nearly 3,000 minutes of game time across 48 appearances in all competitions while chipping in with two goals and four assists. However, that has not helped Arthur’s fortunes at Juventus, with his long-term future uncertain. A return to the Premier League might be on the cards, with Everton and Newcastle United vying for his signature.

Premier League return on the cards?

Everton’s interest in Arthur Melo is understandable. The Toffees are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Amadou Onana. The former Barcelona midfielder has thus emerged as a viable target for Everton.

As for Newcastle United, Elliot Anderson has left the club to join Nottingham Forest, while Sean Longstaff faces an uncertain future at St. James’ Park. So, it behoves Newcastle United to invest in a midfielder. And the Magpies are waging a battle with Everton for Arthur’s services.

The story is in the early stages, and it will be interesting to see if the 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder becomes a top target for Newcastle United and Everton as both clubs look for a new midfielder.
