West Ham United eyeing Jake O’Brien swoop

West Ham United are reportedly keen on signing Irish defender Jake O’Brien from Ligue 1 club Lyon this summer.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, West Ham United are keen on signing 23-year-old Lyon defender Jake O’Brien, and it remains to be seen whether they can secure an agreement with the French outfit. They have targeted the Irishman as an alternative to Max Kilman.

Jake O’Brien has done quite well in Ligue 1, and bringing the former Crystal Palace defender back to the Premier League could prove to be a wise decision. West Ham need more quality and depth in the defensive unit, and the Irish defender would be a solid long-term acquisition.

The opportunity to move to the Premier League can be quite attractive for most players, and it is fair to assume that the 23-year-old will be attracted to the idea of joining the East London club if a concrete proposal is submitted in the coming weeks.

West Ham will have to plug the gaps in their squad if they want to do well next season. The East Londoners will be hoping to push for European qualification, and they will also look to do well in the domestic competitions. They have looked vulnerable at the back this past season, and signing a quality central defender would be a wise decision.

The 23-year-old defender knows English football well from his time at Crystal Palace, and he could prove to be a quality addition for the Hammers. O’Brien has proven himself in Ligue 1 and he is certainly good enough for the Premier League as well. West Ham have identified him as an alternative to top target Max Kilman.

Jake O’Brien could fancy West Ham move

West Ham have been competing in European football over the last two seasons, and they recently won the UEFA Europa Conference League as well. They will be an attractive destination for the player. The Lyon defender will hope that the two clubs can finalise an agreement soon. West Ham certainly have the financial resources to get the deal done.

The 23-year-old central defender has a contract with Lyon until 2027, and the Ligue 1 outfit are under no pressure to sell him for a knock down price. They could easily demand the premium for him. It will be interesting to see if West Ham are willing to break the bank for him.

The defender will help West Ham tighten up at the back, and his aerial prowess will add a new dimension to their attack during set pieces as well. O’Brien has scored five goals this past season, and he could be a very handy option for the Hammers while attacking set pieces.
