Newcastle United keen on Georges Mikautadze

Newcastle United are reportedly keen on Georges Mikautadze as a potential striker option to replace Callum Wilson.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are interested in a deal for Georges Mikautadze, with his team Metz ready to cash in on him. It would reportedly take €25 million to sign the Georgian striker, who has been a shining star at Euro 2024, as the Magpies continue to search for options to replace Callum Wilson.

Newcastle United keen on Georges Mikautadze

Some international tournaments would do wonders for some players, especially those who might have gone under the radar had it not been for the big summer showdown. Georges Mikautadze has shone at Euro 2024, scoring three goals in as many games and laying down one assist.

He scored a penalty against Portugal to give Georgia a comfortable lead on their way to beating Portugal and qualifying for the knockout rounds in his nation’s first-ever Euros appearance. Had it not been for this tournament, the likelihood of any club looking at him in the market would have been remote.

Mikautadze has made himself prominent in the market, and now Newcastle United are chasing his signature. The Magpies are looking at a new striker to replace Callum Wilson, who is expected to leave St James Park. The Georgian had a decent enough season with 14 goals for Metz, although he could not prevent his team from relegation.

Metz only signed him up for a loan from Ajax with a buy option worth around €13 million. They have now exercised that option and are demanding €25 million to sell him to a suitor. They have already informed the necessary people and appointed representatives to talk to interested parties, which will now include Newcastle United.

Newcastle’s striker search explained

For weeks now, they have had links to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, although the Magpies have reportedly cooled their interest in the Everton striker. This could well have happened because of the costs involved in signing the striker, and in this case, they might prefer someone like Mikautadze, who has 17 goals in all formats since January.

Meanwhile, they are keen on retaining Alexander Isak and are progressing well with contract talks. As for Wilson, they wish to move on from the striker and could continue searching for options that include Mikautadze and even Dominic Solanke.
