Newcastle United front-runners to sign Federico Gatti

Newcastle United could emerge as the front-runners for Federico Gatti if Juventus were willing to sell him and the player wished to leave.

According to Alfredo Pedulla, Newcastle United are eager to get in front of the queue for Federico Gatti, as Eddie Howe wants a top-rated defender in his ranks. The 26-year-old Italian international is not overly keen to leave his current surroundings, and the Bianconeri are also not leaning towards a sale, although things could swiftly change.

The idea of bringing in Federico Gatti might entice plenty of clubs, and he does have interest from several English sides, including Newcastle United. The 26-year-old Italian international has been a consistent presence for Juventus and seems settled in his role at the club.

Yet Newcastle United are eager to make themselves the front-runners if there is an opening to sign the 26-year-old Italian. This situation may only arise if Juventus are open to a sale and whether Gatti himself fancies a move out of the club and to Newcastle United or some other team.

Gatti is part of the Italian squad at the Euros but has yet to start a game. He seemed like an important cog in Massimiliano Allegri’s side and might retain his status under new Juventus manager Thiago Motta unless the former Bologna boss decides it is time to move on.

Further reports are linking his defensive partner Gleison Bremer to a move away, although things have gone quiet on that front. Overall, Juventus might look to keep hold of their current defenders and make essential signings in other areas of the pitch.

Newcastle United want new defenders

In this scenario, whether Newcastle United have a chance to sign the 26-year-old Italian international remains to be seen. Either way, should they manage to convince him and Juventus, the defender could be a solid addition to Eddie Howe’s side, who are desperate to sign a top-notch name in their defence.

The injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles in the latter stages of the season have somewhat derailed Newcastle United’s plans, as Howe had to focus on different areas of the squad. They have already agreed a deal with Lloyd Kelly and are keen on signing at least one more centre-back.
