AC MIlan interested in Inigo Martinez

AC Milan will reportedly look to sign 33-year-old Spanish defender Inigo Martinez from Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Inigo Martinez is the subject of interest from AC Milan. The Serie A giants are keen on signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. And they have identified the 33-year-old Barcelona defender as a cost-effective target to bolster the backline.

Inigo Martinez and his career so far

Inigo Martinez has been a dependable performer for Barcelona since arriving from Athletic Club last summer. A native of Ondarroa, he graduated from the youth division at Real Sociedad before rising in prominence during his stint with the Basque outfit. However, the Spaniard saw his stock skyrocket during his spell with Athletic Club.

The 33-year-old joined Barcelona from Athletic Club in a Bosman move last summer, ending his half-decade-long association with the Basque outfit. However, fitness issues plagued Martinez for most of the 2023/24 campaign, forcing him to miss nearly the first half of the 2023/24 season.

But, the Spanish international defender made his mark after regaining his fitness, amassing more than 1,500 minutes of game time across 25 appearances in all competitions. Meanwhile, Martinez’s exploits for Barcelona have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. AC Milan might be his next destination.

Serie A adventure in the pipeline?

AC Milan’s interest in Inigo Martinez is understandable. The Serie A giants are scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window after losing Simon Kjaer and Mattia Caldara as free agents in a few days. While the Rossoneri will have four central defenders, another centre-back will complete the unit.

Martinez has thus emerged as a viable target for AC Milan. However, signing the 33-year-old Spaniard might not be straightforward as he reportedly wants to stay at FC Barcelona beyond the summer transfer window. The defender’s stance is understandable, considering he has barely scratched the surface at the Catalan club.

It will be interesting to see if AC Milan can compel Barcelona and Martinez to seal the deal in the summer transfer window. The Spanish international should not cost a bomb, even though he was a 2023 signing for the Blaugrana.
