Cristian Romero happy at Tottenham amid Real Madrid links

Real Madrid have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Cristian Romero as the Argentine World Cup winner is happy to continue at Tottenham.

According to a report from Football Insider, Real Madrid want to reinforce their defence this summer on a priority basis, and they are keen on acquiring the services of Cristian Romero. But, Tottenham have no intentions of sanctioning his departure, and the player is believed to be happy at the North London club despite interest in him from across Europe.

Romero made the move to Spurs three years back from Atalanta in a deal worth £42.5 million. He has gone from strength to strength over the years and has established himself as a mainstay for both club and country.

He has played a big part in Argentina’s dominance on the international stage as they have lifted every major silverware available in recent years. While he still has three years left on his deal at the English club, his consistent performances have resulted in a lot of interest.

Real Madrid keen on Romero, move unlikely

Clubs are ready to prise him away from North London, but they are not going to find it easy to negotiate with Spurs. Real Madrid are one of the clubs keen on having the 26-year-old in their ranks. Los Blancos might have won the UEFA Champions League and La Liga last season, but they did struggle because of lack of depth at the back.

With Eder Militao and David Alaba injured for the majority of the season, they only had Nacho Fernandez and Antonio Rudiger as the out-and-out centre-back options. Aurelien Tchouameni had to drop into the heart of the defence to get them over the line on multiple occasions.

Nacho’s time at the Santiago Bernabeu is over, and the Real Madrid captain will part ways with the club this summer. As a result, Carlo Ancelotti is desperate for defensive reinforcement. Romero is quite high on their wishlist, and they have been in contact with the North London club.

But, it seems they have suffered a blow in their pursuit as the player is happy to continue at Tottenham. It would require an exceptional offer for Daniel Levy to even consider selling one of his best players and even then it would be unlikely that he accepts it.

Despite all the interest in his services, Romero is currently focused on doing his best for Argentina at the Copa America and then returning to be a part of Ange Postecoglou’s team for the 2024/25 campaign.
