Newcastle United have enquired about Torino defensive mainstay Alessandro Buongiorno ahead of a potential transfer.
According to Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness, Newcastle United are keen on reinforcing their defence ahead of next season, and they have their eyes set on Alessandro Buongiorno. The Italian centre-back has attracted a lot of interest on the back of his consistent performances. The Magpies are one of the clubs interested in him, and they have initiated contact as they look to learn more about a potential transfer.
Buongiorno has come up the ranks at Torino, and he has been a part of their first team since the summer of 2018. After a few loan spells during the initial days, he managed to establish himself in the senior setup and has only gone from strength to strength since.
The left-footed centre-back was involved in 31 matches last season, and he even contributed towards four goals. On the back of his consistent performances, he was named in the Italian squad for the Euros. While he still has four years left on his deal at Torino, the 25-year-old could be on the move this summer, given the amount of interest in him.
Napoli are one of the clubs that are interested in signing Alessandro Buongiorno and they have offered €35 million including bonuses. But, that offer is not good enough as the Italian outfit are holding out on their asking price of €45 million.
Newcastle United interested in Buongiorno
Newcastle are also keen on the defender’s signature, and they could be the ones who end up meeting Torino’s expectations for his signature. The Magpies do need to reinforce their defence ahead of next season, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles currently out injured.
The duo picked up long-term injuries towards the end of last season, and they might not be back in time for the start of next season. As a result, Eddie Howe wants to ensure he has enough depth at the back and Buongiorno’s arrival could help solve quite a few of their problems.
The Magpies have already initiated contacts as they acquire more information about a potential transfer of the Italian international this summer. Newcastle seem serious about their pursuit of Buongiorno, who is represented by the same agents as Sandro Tonali. As per the report, they have most likely contacted him ahead of a potential move.
