Tottenham Hotspur keen on Weston McKennie

Tottenham Hotspur have overtaken Aston Villa in the race for the services of Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race for the signature of Weston McKennie. The Juventus midfielder was closing in on a move to Aston Villa but those talks have stalled and Spurs have jumped the queue to be in the driving seat.

With McKennie’s contract expiring in 12 months’ time, there has been a lot of interest in his services. Premier League clubs are keen on signing him. While he did struggle during a short loan spell at Leeds United during the 2022/23 season, the American international bounced back with consistent performances for Juventus last season.

The American midfielder was involved in 38 matches across competitions and he managed to bag 10 assists. On the back of his performances and with his contract expiring, Unai Emery was all set to welcome the 25-year-old to the club.

McKennie was set to make the move to Villa as a part of a complex swap deal which would have seen Douglas Luiz join Juventus. It would have been a player-plus-cash deal where the American international and teammate Samuel Iling-Junior would have made the move to England.

Tottenham hijack Villa’s move for McKennie

Unfortunately, that deal hasn’t gone through, talks have been stalled and Spurs have made the most out of the situation. The report suggests the North London club have hijacked Villa’ deal by agreeing on a cut-price fee for McKennie.

Ange Postecoglou is keen on reinforcing his midfield ahead of next season. He wants more quality as well as depth in his squad as they look to take the next step. McKennie’s addition could do wonders for them given his recent performances for the Old Lady.

They recently approached Juventus to enquire about the cost of the operation. After doing their checks, Spurs have made their move to sign him. Both parties have held talks over a deal worth £15 million for the American international. With his contract running out in 2025, Spurs might have once again pulled off another exceptional piece of transfer business.
