Manchester United considering Edson Alvarez swoop

Manchester United have reportedly identified Mexico captain and West Ham United midfielder Edson Alvarez as a summer target.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Edson Alvarez is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old West Ham United star and Mexico’s captain has thus emerged as a target for the Premier League heavyweights.

Edson Alvarez and his short stint at West Ham United so far

Edson Alvarez has established himself as one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League since arriving from Ajax last summer. A mainstay in the middle of the park for his club and country, the 26-year-old has become Mexico’s captain and will don the armband at the upcoming Copa America 2024.

The Mexican international was a regular in the middle of the park for West Ham, amassing more than 3,000 minutes of game time across 42 appearances in all competitions while chipping in with two goals and two assists. Meanwhile, Alvarez’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs.

The former Ajax midfielder was a target for a few well-known outfits before he joined West Ham last summer. The latest report has revealed that Alvarez is a target for Manchester United, with the Premier League heavyweights internally discussing a possible move in the summer transfer window.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Manchester United’s interest in Edson Alvarez is understandable. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term futures of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Donny van de Beek.

So, several midfielders, including Fermin Lopez, have emerged on Manchester United’s radar. But Alvarez is also a viable target, with Erik ten Hag being an admirer of the 26-year-old, who he coached during their time together at Ajax. However, a summer move will unlikely see the light of day.

Alvarez has spent only one season at West Ham United, and the Hammers consider him a “key player” in the first-team squad. So, Manchester United will face a tall order to land the 26-year-old and must keep their options open to bolster their midfield in the summer transfer window.
