Barcelona, Espanyol vying for Marc Canteras

Barcelona will reportedly compete with Espanyol to sign 19-year-old Spanish midfielder Marc Canteras from FE Grama this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Marc Canteras is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants want to assign the 19-year-old utility man to their reserve side if they secure his services in the summer transfer window. However, they will have to compete with local rivals Espanyol for the FE Grama whizkid.

Who is Marc Canteras?

Marc Canteras is one of the brightest young prospects in the lower reaches of Spanish football. A former trainee at CF Damm, an “emblematic club” of Barcelona youth football, he joined FE Grama, a team based in the Santa Coloma de Gramenet region of Barcelona, as a youth player a few years ago.

The 19-year-old became a regular in the first-team squad towards the end of the 2023/24 season and amassed nearly 1,000 minutes of game time in ten appearances for FE Grama. Meanwhile, Canteras’s progress at the Catalan outfit has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of a few well-known clubs in the region.

The teenage prospect is a utility man who can play as a midfielder and a centre-back. The Spanish whizkid is also adept with the ball at his feet, with that quality attracting the interest of Barcelona. However, the Catalan giants face stiff competition from RCD Espanyol for the young prodigy.

Move across Barcelona on the cards?

Barcelona’s interest in Marc Canteras is understandable. The Catalan giants constantly scour the market for bright young prospects to bolster their different squads. As for Barcelona Atletic, recent reports have pointed to talks to complete a permanent move for Mamadou Fall. The Senegalese defender might have a new teammate in Canteras.

However, Barcelona will not be alone in the race to secure Marc Canteras’s services in the summer transfer window, with the 19-year-old Spanish utility man also a target for RCD Espanyol. With Espanyol in the Segunda Division, they can offer him a big jump from the fifth tier of Spanish football.

So, Canteras will remain in Catalonia after the summer transfer window ends. However, it will be interesting to see where the 19-year-old Spaniard plies his trade next season amid the links with Barcelona and Espanyol.
