Manchester United will likely present a proposal to sign 26-year-old Spanish international Josep Martinez from Serie A club Genoa.
According to reputed Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Josep Martinez is the subject of interest from Manchester United. Widespread reports have heavily linked the Spanish international with Inter Milan. However, the Red Devils might hijack the Serie A champions’ move by submitting a bid to sign the Genoa goalkeeper.
Who is Josep Martinez?
Josep Martinez has found a stable footing since moving abroad a few years ago. A native of Alzira, he began his youth career at his hometown club before progressing through the ranks at Barcelona’s fabled La Masia division. However, the Spaniard graduated from the academy at UD Las Palmas.
The 26-year-old moved abroad in July 2020 by joining RB Leipzig but managed only four outings for the German outfit. Genoa snapped the player up on loan two years later, and he has not looked back since then. Martinez has turned out 68 times thus far for the Italian club, keeping 25 clean sheets while conceding 68 goals.
Martinez’s exploits for Genoa have earned him his debut for Spain, although he has managed only one appearance for La Roja. Nevertheless, the Spanish goalkeeper’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including Manchester United.
Premier League move in the pipeline?
Manchester United’s interest in Josep Martinez is surprising. While Andre Onana made a few high-profile errors in the 2023/24 season, he will remain the first-choice goalkeeper for the Red Devils. So, unless Altay Bayindir departs from Old Trafford, Manchester United do not need a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
Nevertheless, Sacha Tavolieri insists a bid is on the cards, with Manchester United “expected” to make an offer to sign the 26-year-old Spanish international from Genoa. However, Serie A champions Inter Milan are also keen on securing Josep Martinez’s services in the summer transfer window.
It will be interesting to see if Manchester United present a proposal to sign the Spaniard in the coming weeks. The rumour appears unfounded, and a move across Serie A to Inter Milan might be a more viable option.
