Serie A giants AC Milan and Tottenham defender Emerson Royal have reportedly sealed an agreement in principle over a summer move to San Siro.
According to a report by Gazzetta dello Sport, as relayed by Sport Witness, Emerson Royal is the subject of interest from AC Milan. The Serie A giants are scouring the market for a right-back heading into the summer transfer window. And they are inching closer to landing the 25-year-old versatile defender, who has sealed the agreement in principle with the Rossoneri.
Emerson Royal and his Tottenham travails
Emerson Royal has been on a topsy-turvy ride since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Barcelona in August 2021. The North London club had seemingly struck a smart deal after his exploits for Real Betis. However, he was dreadful in his debut season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, compelling the London outfit to sign Pedro Porro.
Emerson’s stock has thus gradually fallen, and he has only managed game time due to his ability to play as a left-back. The 25-year-old versatile defender could not manage even 1,500 minutes of action in the 2023/24 season, turning out 24 times while chipping in with one assist.
However, despite struggling for relevance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Emerson might play UEFA Champions League football next season, with AC Milan interested in signing him. The two parties have sealed an agreement over a deal in the summer transfer window.
Serie A move beckons
AC Milan’s interest in Emerson Royal is understandable. While Davide Calabria is the club captain, he has blown hot and cold in the last few seasons. So, the Serie A giants have been keen on signing a right-back in the summer transfer window, with the versatile Tottenham Hotspur defender emerging as a viable target.
Recent reports have pointed to discussions between Emerson and AC Milan over personal terms. The two parties now have an agreement in principle, bringing the Brazilian international a step closer to joining the Serie A club.
However, AC Milan and Tottenham are yet to find common ground on the transfer fee, although the Rossoneri will hope to seal the deal for around €20 million. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old is closing in on moving to San Siro in the summer transfer window.
