Girona, Inter Milan eyeing Sergi Roberto swoop

High-flying La Liga club Girona and Serie A champions Inter Milan are reportedly interested in Barcelona utility man Sergi Roberto.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Sergi Roberto is a target for several high-profile clubs. The long-serving utility man can leave Barcelona as a free agent in the summer transfer window. Girona and Inter Milan are among the prospective suitors for the Spaniard amid uncertainties surrounding his long-term future at the Catalan club.

Sergi Roberto and his Barcelona journey so far

Sergi Roberto has been a reliable performer for Barcelona since establishing a foothold in the first-team squad nearly a decade ago. The 32-year-old was a regular for the Blaugrana for almost half a decade between 2015 and 2020 but has been in and out of the starting lineup since then.

Fitness issues have also played a part in restricting Roberto’s game time, although better players have also usurped him. Meanwhile, the veteran utility man became the Barcelona captain in the 2023/24 season after Sergio Busquets ended his legendary stint by joining Inter Miami last summer.

However, Roberto managed only 1,313 minutes of game time across 24 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with three goals and three assists. Despite the Spanish international’s dwindling game time, Barcelona considered handing him a new contract. However, those talks have stalled in recent weeks, with the situation alerting several high-profile clubs, including Inter Milan and Girona.

What next?

Girona will look to sign a midfielder in the summer transfer window after losing Aleix Garcia to Bayer Leverkusen. In addition, Sergi Roberto can feature as a right-back for the high-flying La Liga club if he moves across Catalonia in the summer transfer window.

As for Inter Milan, they hold a long-standing interest in the Barcelona captain. The Serie A champions can do with a right-back amid uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of Denzel Dumfries. Meanwhile, other La Liga clubs are also keen on securing the veteran utility man’s services in the summer transfer window.

With talks over his contract extension not progressing, time is running out for Roberto to continue his Barcelona stint. It will be interesting to see where he plies his trade in the 2024/25 season amid his links with Girona and Inter Milan.
