Real Madrid keen on Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero

Real Madrid are interested in acquiring the services of Tottenham defensive ace Cristian Romero as they look to reinforce their back line.

According to ESPN Argentina, Real Madrid are keen on signing Cristian Romero ahead of next season. Los Blancos are looking to bolster their backline and they feel the Argentine international could be an exceptional signing for them.

Romero made a name for himself at Atalanta before making the move to Tottenham in the summer of 2021. After an impressive debut season, the move was made permanent next summer. Spurs forked out £41 million to have him at their disposal permanently.

The Argentine centre-back has been one of the mainstays of their team over the years. Last season, Romero featured in 34 outings and he even contributed towards five goals. While Spurs didn’t really have an exceptional season, the 26-year-old surely was one of their best players.

His consistent performances in the heart of the defence for both club and country haven’t gone unnoticed. Multiple top clubs are interested in his services and Real Madrid are one of them. Los Blancos were a dominant force last season as they won the La Liga and the Champions League.

Real Madrid want to sign Romero

While they did reach great heights, it was achieved despite long-term injuries to their first-choice centre-back pair of David Alaba and Eder Militao. This time around Carlo Ancelotti wants to ensure he has enough depth at the back and with Nacho Fernandez’s future uncertain, signing Romero could be a great move by the team in white.

They have already approached the player’s camp as they look to enquire about the 26-year-old. They wanted to gather information about the finances needed to bring him to Madrid as they are considering making a bid. While Los Blancos are keen on signing him, they are not going to find it easy with his contract running until the summer of 2027.

With three years still left on his deal, negotiating with Daniel Levy will not be easy for the Spanish giants. Despite their financial strength, they will find it difficult to prise him away from Spurs given his importance in their team. Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how the player reacts to an opportunity to play for the record Champions League winners.
