Leicester City plot Sean Longstaff swoop

Newly promoted Premier League club Leicester City will reportedly look to sign Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United this summer.

According to a report by Sunday Mirror, as relayed by TBR Football, Sean Longstaff is the subject of interest from Leicester City. The newly-promoted Premier League club will delve into the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. And they have set their sights on the 26-year-old Newcastle United homegrown player.

The Sean Longstaff story

Sean Longstaff has blown hot and cold since breaking into the first-team squad at Newcastle United several years ago. A native of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the English midfielder began his youth career at North Shields Juniors before joining Newcastle United as a six-year-old in 2003.

The 26-year-old made his first-team debut for Newcastle United in August 2018 and has been in and out of the team since then. Longstaff enjoyed a resurgent run in the 2023/24 campaign, becoming a regular in the middle of the park. He amassed over 3,500 minutes of game time across 46 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with eight goals and three assists.

However, Sean Longstaff’s long-term future at Newcastle United is uncertain as he will enter the final year of his contract next month. In addition, with the Tyneside outfit showing interest in many midfielders, including Matteo Guendouzi, a move away from St. James’ Park might suit him. Leicester City might hand him a new adventure in the summer transfer window.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Leicester City’s interest in Sean Longstaff is understandable. The Foxes are scouring the market for a new midfielder heading into the summer transfer window after returning to the Premier League. However, they cannot afford big-money moves this year due to the implications of potentially breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

So, Longstaff has emerged as a viable target for Leicester City. The 26-year-old might be available for a cut-price sum in the summer transfer window after entering the final year of his contract with Newcastle United.

Recent reports have suggested that Newcastle United might look to tie Longstaff to a new contract. However, with talks over a deal not progressing, Leicester City might have the chance to sign the 26-year-old Englishman in the summer transfer window.
