Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of the signature of Real Madrid shot-stopper Andriy Lunin.
According to a report from SPORT, Andriy Lunin, who has had a breakthrough season with Real Madrid, is considering parting ways with the club. Manchester United are one of the clubs keen on his signature and could knock on his door when the window opens.
Lunin was keen on moving away from Real Madrid last summer in search of regular first-team action. But, Carlo Ancelotti convinced him to stay at the club and following an injury crisis in goal, the Ukrainian international got an opportunity to showcase his abilities in the recently-concluded season.
He took the chance with both hands and managed to establish himself in their goal. The 25-year-old was a standout performer for Real Madrid in La Liga, and his heroics played a big part in their incredible run in the UEFA Champions League.
Lunin considering his future at Real Madrid
Thibaut Courtois, who was out injured for the majority of the season, returned just a month before the Champions League final, and he ended up starting ahead of Lunin in the most important game of the season. The Ukrainian shot-stopper is very upset about the decision, even though he saw it coming.
No doubt, Lunin was suffering from influenza B. But the decision to start Courtois was already made following the Belgian’s impressive return to action. Those around him are pushing the Ukrainian for a move away, and Jorge Mendes is ready to make him available in the market.
While he had agreed to a new deal until 2029 when he was a regular starter, the 25-year-old has not penned down anything yet. And with his contract running out in 2025, he is considering forcing his way out.
This could be a huge boost for Manchester United, who are interested in acquiring his services on the back of his breakthrough season with Real Madrid. While the Red Devils made a significant investment in bringing Andre Onana to the club last summer, they are not entirely convinced by the former Inter Milan shot-stopper.
Erik ten Hag has backed Onana throughout the season. But with the Dutch manager’s future not certain yet, they are looking to add another top-level goalkeeper to their squad. Manchester United are considering making a move for Lunin if he is made available in the upcoming window to increase the competition for a place in goal.
