Liverpool are not interested in having Argentine defensive midfielder Alan Varela in their squad despite reports linking him with a move to Anfield.

According to a report from Liverpool Echo, Arne Slot’s team are not keen on acquiring the services of Alan Varela. While the Reds are on the lookout for a new defensive midfielder ahead of next season and have been linked with the Argentine youth international, they have no intentions of making a move for him.

Varela came up the ranks at Boca Juniors and made a name for himself while playing for the Argentine outfit before making the move to FC Porto last summer. Since making the move to Portugal, the 22-year-old has only gone from strength to strength.

He featured in 44 matches in his debut campaign for Porto and was a rock in front of the backline throughout. He even contributed towards five goals and his consistent performances have resulted in a lot of interest in his services.

The midfield sensation who has a £60 million release clause in his deal has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent days. But, those reports have been dismissed by senior figures at the club.

They reportedly have no interest in the Porto star and believe the Argentine’s agent is the one responsible for the reports coming out from South America.

Liverpool to sign a new defensive midfield in summer

Liverpool underwent a major overhaul in the midfield last summer under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp. While those transfers did wonders for them, the Reds wanted to sign a world-class defensive midfielder and they were involved in a few major transfer battles.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t manage to sign their priority targets and ended up acquiring the services of Wataru Endo for £16 million. While the 31-year-old Japanese international has done a decent job, the Reds are expected to enter the market for a new defensive midfielder in the summer.

They will be looking for someone who can help them in the short as well as the long term. While Varela could be a great addition to their ranks given his potential, the Reds have no interest in him and they have other targets that they will focus on to bolster Arne Slot’s team.
