Liverpool want £20 million to sell Sepp van den Berg

Liverpool will reportedly demand around £20 million to sell 22-year-old Dutch defensive prospect Sepp van den Berg this summer.

According to a report by The Athletic, Sepp van den Berg might not have a future at Liverpool FC beyond the summer transfer window. The Reds have slapped a price tag of £20 million to part ways with the 22-year-old defensive prospect. Meanwhile, Premier League duo Brentford and Southampton are interested in securing the youngster’s services.

Sepp van den Berg and his Liverpool woes

Sepp van den Berg has failed to establish a foothold in the first-team squad at Anfield since joining Liverpool from PEC Zwolle in July 2019. A native of Zwolle, the Dutchman spent most of his formative years in his hometown before moving to Liverpool as a 17-year-old half a decade ago.

However, the 22-year-old has spent most of his spell with Liverpool away from Anfield in the last five years. The youngster has embarked on three loan spells in recent seasons, with the latest stint coming at FSV Mainz 05 this past term. He amassed nearly 3,000 minutes of game time across 36 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with three goals.

However, Sepp van den Berg’s long-term future at the Merseyside club is uncertain heading into the summer transfer window. With Liverpool in the market for a centre-back amid links with Antonio Silva, the Dutch defensive prospect will unlikely establish a foothold in the backline. However, he does not have a shortage of interest, with Brentford and Southampton keen on signing him.

Move across Premier League on the cards?

Brentford will delve into the market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window after an injury-riddled 2023/24 campaign. Ben Mee and Zanka are on the wrong side of 30, necessitating the need to sign a young centre-back in the summer transfer window.

As for Southampton, the Saints want new signings in the summer transfer window after returning to the Premier League by beating Leeds United in the EFL Championship promotion playoff final. However, Sepp van den Berg will not come cheap, with Liverpool demanding around £20 million to part ways with him.

Brentford and Southampton might have the funds to cough up £20 million to secure the services of the Liverpool defender. However, the Premier League duo will face stiff competition from Ajax and VfL Wolfsburg, meaning the race to sign the 22-year-old Dutch defensive prospect should heat up in the coming weeks.
