Newcastle United register interest in James Trafford

Newcastle United have reportedly registered their interest in James Trafford, with Liverpool also keen on signing him this summer.

According to a report by Football Insider, James Trafford is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies have contacted the representatives of the Burnley goalkeeper to express their eagerness to sign him. Meanwhile, the English shot-stopper is also a target for Liverpool, with the Clarets demanding around £20 million to part ways with him.

James Trafford and his Burnley journey

James Trafford endured a frustrating debut season with Burnley after arriving from Manchester City last summer. The 21-year-old was one of the most highly-rated goalkeepers in the country before moving to Turf Moor after a triumphant campaign with England at the Under-21 European Championships.

However, the Englishman endured a trial by fire at Burnley during his debut season, barely keeping a clean sheet this past season. Trafford conceded a whopping 62 goals in 28 Premier League appearances, managing only two shut-outs before losing his spot to Arijanet Muric, another former Manchester City goalkeeper.

However, Trafford’s stock remains high, with several well-known Premier League outfits eager to prise him away from Burnley after the club’s relegation to the EFL Championships. Newcastle United and Liverpool are vying for his signature, with Burnley demanding around £20 million to sell him.

Swift return to the Premier League on the cards?

Newcastle United’s interest in James Trafford is understandable. The Tyneside club will likely part ways with Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius in the summer transfer window. In addition, recent reports have claimed that Nick Pope will not be the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper next season. So, the Burnley prospect has emerged as a viable target for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have expressed their interest in the English goalkeeper, although they face stiff competition from Liverpool. The Reds will also dip their toes in the market for a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Caoimhin Kelleher. So, Trafford is an option worth considering for Liverpool.

With Newcastle United contacting James Trafford’s representatives, a summer move might be on the cards. However, other Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, might join the race to sign him. So, the Magpies must move quickly to secure his signature in the coming weeks.
