Christian Eriksen could leave Manchester United depending on who takes over at the Old Trafford dugout following speculation surrounding Erik ten Hag.
According to The Sun, Christian Eriksen could decide on his Manchester United future depending on what happens with the club’s managerial situation and he could return to his former club Ajax. The links to Mauricio Pochettino have got the Danish star excited, but the club might look to part ways with some of their high earners, including Eriksen.
Christian Eriksen’s Manchester United future
Christian Eriksen signed a three-year deal in 2022 when he chose to leave Brentford after a six-month stint there. Manchester United took him on a free transfer, and in hindsight, he has been a decent signing at best, although not many would have expected the Danish star to uproot trees at Old Trafford.
Eriksen played 44 times in all competitions during his first campaign, but his number has significantly dropped to 28 games this campaign. Manchester United have been open to letting him leave, but his £1,50,000-a-week wages might prove a stumbling block in their efforts to offload him.
Eriksen knows his situation well and could be open to leaving the club to get a prominent role elsewhere. The midfielder is not content with life on the bench, and that’s where he was during Manchester United’s FA Cup triumph on Sunday. While he could head for the exit, the Danish star may wait a little longer to see what happens with the club’s managerial situation.
With Mauricio Pochettino linked with Manchester United, the presence of the ex-Tottenham and Chelsea boss would see him regain an essential place in the squad. Hence, should the Argentine replace Erik Ten Hag at the helm, Eriksen might look to continue his stay at the club and probably see out the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag’s future in the balance?
With Eriksen’s decision to leave reportedly hinged on Manchester United’s managerial position, all the focus will be on Erik Ten Hag and what happens with his time here. The Dutchman has already flown on a holiday despite the intense speculation over his future. Reports stated that the club would sack him regardless of what happens in the FA Cup Final, although Ten Hag seemingly refuted that claim.
Hence, Ten Hag’s immediate future has not been decided, and a decision is likely to come in the coming period when INEOS evaluates his situation and the available options to replace him.
