Manchester United are reportedly willing to offer Bruno Fernandes in a bizarre exchange deal to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Frenkie de Jong remains the subject of interest from Manchester United, and Bruno Fernandes might be a part of the deal to sign him. Erik ten Hag is keen on reuniting with the Dutchman at Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.
Frenkie de Jong and his Barcelona journey
Frenkie de Jong has been among the best midfielders in the world for over half a dozen years. The Dutchman has been arguably the most reliable performer for Barcelona since arriving from Ajax in July 2019. However, he has been in a spot of bother at the Catalan club in recent years due to the never-ending financial duress.
However, the 27-year-old has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for Barcelona, turning out more than 200 times while chipping in with 17 goals and 21 assists. But de Jong faces an uncertain future at the Catalan club heading into the summer transfer window, with Manchester United still keen on securing his services.
The Red Devils hold a long-standing interest in the Dutch midfielder, having made multiple previous attempts to secure his services. However, a move has never materialised, with de Jong remaining committed to Barcelona, thus snubbing the advances from Manchester United.
Manchester United’s relentless de Jong chase
The continued interest from Manchester United in Frenkie de Jong is understandable. The Premier League heavyweights have endured a horrendous 2023/24 campaign, with Erik ten Hag losing control of the campaign. Manchester United must bolster multiple departments in the summer transfer window to get back on track, with the midfield unit needing new signings.
The Barcelona mainstay is thus a viable target for Manchester United. And Fichajes has bizarrely claimed that they are ready to offer Bruno Fernandes in a deal to sign Frenkie de Jong. While the 29-year-old Manchester United talisman is reportedly open to leaving the club under certain circumstances, such a notion seems preposterous.
So, it will be shocking to see Barcelona landing Bruno Fernandes while parting ways with de Jong in the coming weeks. In addition, the Dutchman remains reluctant to leave Barcelona. So, a summer exchange deal will unlikely see the light of day.
