Lucas Vazquez set to sign Real Madrid contract extension

Lucas Vazquez has reportedly agreed to sign a new one-year contract with Real Madrid while knocking back the offer to join Juventus.

According to Spanish journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon, Lucas Vazquez was the subject of interest from Juventus. The Serie A heavyweights are in the market for a right-back heading into the summer transfer window. However, the versatile Real Madrid wide man has rejected the Bianconeri and will sign a one-year extension with Los Blancos.

Lucas Vazquez and his Real Madrid journey

Lucas Vazquez has been a handy asset for Real Madrid despite not being an undisputed first-choice starter for the club. The Spaniard began his career as a boisterous right-winger, making an impact with his marauding runs on the flank. However, he has transitioned into a right-back in the last few years.

Vazquez’s run as a right-back started when Dani Carvajal was struggling with a few fitness issues. However, the veteran wide man was so successful as a makeshift full-back that he turned that into a full-time role. And the 32-year-old has been an able backup to Carvajal in recent seasons.

The Spanish international has turned out nearly 350 times thus far for Real Madrid, chipping in with 35 goals and 63 assists. However, there have been concerns surrounding Vazquez’s long-term future at the Santiago Bernabeu as he has entered the final two months of his contract. Such a situation had captured the attention of several well-known clubs, including Juventus.

What does the future have in store for Vazquez?

Juventus’s interest in Lucas Vazquez is understandable. Andrea Cambiaso faces an uncertain future at the Allianz Stadium, while Danilo is on the wrong side of 30. While Vazquez is also in his thirties, he seemingly has a longer shelf life due to his style of play, which does not harm his body much.

So, the Spaniard was a viable target for Juventus heading into the summer transfer window. However, a Bosman move will not see the light of day, as the 32-year-old will extend his stay at Real Madrid by signing a one-year extension. The two parties have sealed the agreement, with an official announcement coming soon.

It will be interesting to see if Juventus can do anything to turn Vazquez’s head in the coming weeks. However, the Spanish international is closing in on extending his stay at Real Madrid by signing a new contract.
