Newcastle United are at the front of the queue to sign Aaron Ramsdale ahead of the summer, with the goalkeeper set to leave Arsenal.
According to The Independent, Newcastle United are the front-runners in the chase for Aaron Ramsdale. The Arsenal ace is set to leave North London in search of regular football, having fallen behind David Raya in the pecking order at the Emirates.
Newcastle United leading the Aaron Ramsdale chase
Mikel Arteta surprised a few, and most certainly Aaron Ramsdale, when he brought in David Raya late in the summer window. The Spaniard has since taken on the No.1 position, which has rendered the England international as his deputy, a role he may not want to continue in next season.
With Raya seemingly settled in that role, and once the Gunners make his loan a permanent move, it may be time for Ramsdale to move on. Newcastle United were linked with him in January as a replacement for the injured Nick Pope, and the Englishman seems open to joining the Magpies.
Eddie Howe’s side is in front of the queue of many top clubs chasing the Arsenal ace, who has been playing only his third season since joining from Sheffield United in a £30 million deal. He may consider a move to St. James’ Park if the conditions are right. And currently, it may appear the club may give him a guarantee of becoming their No.1 for next season.
Ramsdale is still young and wants to make a significant mark at club and international levels. The lack of game time this season means his chances of going with England for the Euros have been affected, although, with regular game time, he could return to challenge Jordan Pickford for the place. Hence, a move to a club like Newcastle United would make sense, although he has interest from overseas clubs as well.
Arsenal eyeing a homegrown replacement
While there have been links to many keepers from England or abroad, it appears the Gunners are keen on a homegrown name to replace Ramsdale. Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson was mentioned earlier, while the latest reports linked Arsenal with a move for Brighton & Hove Albion star Jason Steele.
The latter would fit the role as an able backup to Raya. But it remains to be seen whether he would accept such a role given how little Ramsdale has played this season. Former Arsenal stopper Wojciech Szczesny is also linked, but his wages will see the Gunners turn down the opportunity to bring him back.
