Manchester United are reportedly looking seriously at sacking underperforming Erik Ten Hag and replacing him with Girona miracle-worker Michel.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United are seriously considering their options for the bench for next season, and one of the names that has surfaced is Girona’s highly-touted boss Michel.
Erik ten Hag is set for the sack at Old Trafford
Erik ten Hag is under intense pressure to improve performances and results before the end of the season after winning just one of his last seven Premier League games. Manchester United had a positive first season under the Dutchman last term, as he guided them to an FA Cup final, an EFL Cup trophy, and a top-four finish in the Premier League.
However, it has not gone according to plan this campaign, with Manchester United crashing out of Europe by finishing bottom of their Champions League group. Meanwhile, they are currently sitting seventh in the Premier League.
Manchester United did beat Championship side Coventry City to reach the FA Cup final on Sunday. But they threw away a three-goal lead and almost lost before eventually winning on penalties. And a report in Fichajes claimed that ten Hag is now set for the sack, and the Manchester United board has identifed as many as six candidates to replace the Dutch boss.
Manchester United admire Girona manager Michel
It is no wonder that Michel Sanchez is a man in demand. Girona have been in stellar form this season and have massively overachieved thus far. The Catalan outfit are currently sitting in third place in the table, seven points above Atletico Madrid in fourth.
They secured European qualification over the weekend, and with Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club both failing to win, their prospects of achieving a place in next season’s Champions League are looking very good.
However, there is a chance that Michel, who is tied down until 2026, may not be at Girona for next season, as he is on Manchester United’s managerial watch, as they contemplate replacing under-fire Ten Hag.
The report notes that Michel is an option alongside the likes of Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi, both of whom have been linked with Barcelona in the last few months. Michel could be a smart option for Manchester United, although there is no doubt that they would be a massive step up.
