Mikel Arteta has reportedly urged Arsenal to sign talented Brighton & Hove Albion forward Evan Ferguson as they look to acquire a new number nine this summer.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is seemingly already thinking about boosting his attacking options so his troops can mount a sustained challenge on all fronts next season, and one of the names that the Spaniard’s pushing the board to sign is Brighton striker Evan Ferguson.
The Spaniard’s consideration of signing a new striker could be in part due to Gabriel Jesus’ inconsistency in front of goal and spate of injuries since his 2022 move to the Emirates, with Eddie Nketiah continuing to blow hot and cold in front of goal since penning the new contract.
Ferguson is thought to be a player of interest for Arsenal and would certainly tick the box of a physical presence many have suggested they need up front. The Gunners have also been heavily linked to Brentford’s Ivan Toney when it comes to players of this mould.
The Republic of Ireland’s number nine had a huge impact on the Seagulls in the second half of last season. He scored six goals and supplied two assists in 19 league appearances, prompting speculation that he’s destined to become the Premier League’s next top striker.
This season, though, he has somewhat fallen short of expectations, having only scored six goals in 24 league appearances.
Ferguson was expected to step up after scoring a hat-trick against Newcastle United in September, but he has only scored two goals in all competitions since then.
The 19-year-old hasn’t scored since November and is enduring a dry spell in front of goal. However, Ferguson remains a priority option for Arteta, despite his poor form. The above report adds that Ferguson’s scoring ability and potential to develop make him attractive to the North London side in their search for offensive options.
Arsenal to compete with Chelsea to sign €100 million-rated Evan Ferguson
The Seagulls’ have previously shown a willingness to sell for the right price. But given Ferguson’s potential, any potential fee is likely to be extremely hefty, with the €100 million price tag bandied about.
The Irishman is also thought to be a player of interest for Chelsea, who were reported to be willing to pay up to €100 million for the teenage sensation.
The Blues are keen to find a quality out-and-out number nine to help them push up the Premier League table and change the fortunes of a club struggling to break back into the top six.
With the summer still a few months away, both Arsenal and Chelsea will have plenty of time to weigh their options before deciding whether or not to compete for Ferguson, while the Irishman will be looking for a turnaround of form to show the suitors that he’s ready for a big-money move.
