Manchester United and Real Madrid are both keen on having Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong in their ranks.
According to SportBild via SportWitness, Manchester United and Real Madrid have started planning for the upcoming summer transfer window. They are looking to reinforce their defence and have their eyes set on Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.
The 23-year-old has been in sensational form in the ongoing season and there is a lot of interest in his services. Meanwhile, both the European giants have already registered their interest in the Dutch international.
Frimpong’s rise at Bayer Leverkusen
While things might not have worked out for Frimpong at Manchester City, he did manage to get things going after joining Celtic. After a sensational 18-month stint at the Scottish club, Bayer Leverkusen signed him in the winter of 2021 and he has gone from strength to strength since.
In the ongoing season, he has played a big part in Leverkusen’s dominance in all competitions. He has featured in 36 matches and has contributed towards 23 goals (12 goals and 11 assists). His performances haven’t gone unnoticed and top clubs from across Europe are pushing for his signatures.
United and Madrid keen on Frimpong’s services
Manchester United and Real Madrid are two clubs that have been linked with him. According to the report, both clubs have established some sort of contact as they look to land him in the upcoming transfer window. They have made their interest known and things are expected to take shape in the next months.
The Red Devils do have two quality right-backs who have done a decent job. But, the future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka isn’t that certain. He could be on the move and Frimpong could be a great replacement. The 23-year-old will make them more threatening from the right flank.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid do have Dani Carvajal who is their preferred choice at right-back and he has been in sensational form. But, he is already 32 and is not going to get any younger. As a result, the Leverkusen wing-back could be a great long-term replacement.
The release clause in Frimpong’s contract
While Frimpong’s contract runs until the summer of 2028, there is a €40m release clause in his contract that could lead to his departure. But, that can only be exercised before the Euros start on June 14th.
The Dutch international hasn’t decided his future yet but he is expected to make a decision before the end of April. Xabi Alonso and Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes are working to make sure he stays at the club.
The 23-year-old wing-back seems to be quite comfortable at the club. As a result, United and Real Madrid will have to move fast to convince him about a move as they only have over two months to activate the clause.
