According to Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, LAFC are the current favourite to land Olivier Giroud in the summer. The 37-year-old former Chelsea attacker’s deal with Milan expires in the summer, with staying at the San Siro also an option, although he might be leaning towards a change of scenery and joining the MLS.
LAFC favourites for Olivier Giroud?
Fabrizio Romano thinks LAFC are the current favourite to land veteran striker Olivier Giroud on a free transfer. The. Italian transfer expert insisted the MLS side has already made a formal offer for the former Chelsea attacker, who might be leaning towards making a switch to the United States.
Romano said, “Another player heading to the MLS looks like Olivier Giroud. It’s not done yet, but LAFC are pushing, and they are the favourites.”
“Giroud also had some approaches from UAE, some approaches from other MLS clubs and also some calls from Saudi. But LAFC sent a formal proposal, which they are pushing, and it’s up to Giroud now as this decision also involves his family.”
“Hugo Lloris is also at LAFC and is pushing for his old friend and France international colleague to join him at the MLS club, so let’s see what happens.”
Only days ago, The Athletic’s David Ornstein broke the news on LAFC’s interest in Giroud. However, the English journalist insisted that staying in Milan was also an option, indicating that other clubs were keen. However, according to Romano, the former Chelsea attacker might have already leaned towards joining the MLS side, especially now that he’s already received an offer.
Giroud has considered joining the MLS, although plenty of clubs have been linked in the last few months with the veteran French striker. Incidentally, Manchester United had links back in January, and a few Premier League sides are keen on the Milan star.
However, he may call time on his brilliant European and international career to pursue a new adventure in the United States. LAFC are currently the favourite to sign him, although, as Romano mentions, some sides from UAE and Saudi Arabia are also keeping tabs on the Frenchman.
Olivier Giroud’s career in a nutshell
Giroud is widely considered a late bloomer in footballing terms, having only come to light with a title-winning campaign with Montpellier. He then moved to Arsenal, where he scored his most career goals. While he only won three FA Cups with the Gunners, his primary career highlight came with London rivals Chelsea, where he lifted the Champions League crown.
He has since joined AC Milan, and Stefano Pioli has selected him as his first-choice striker. France’s boss, Didier Deschamps, also continues to bank on the forward, and he could well play his last piece of European football at the Euros before likely switching to the MLS with LAFC.
