La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly readying a contract offer for Andriy Lunin, with the 25-year-old proving his credentials this season.
According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on his Here We Go podcast, Andriy Lunin will soon have a new contract on his table. Real Madrid will look to tie the 25-year-old to a new deal ahead of the summer transfer window after an excellent campaign by the 10-cap Ukrainian international.
Andriy Lunin and his Real Madrid journey
Andriy Lunin has had to bide his time since joining Real Madrid from Zorya Luhansk in July 2018. The 25-year-old has been with Los Blancos for nearly half a dozen years but has only been a regular between the sticks this season. Loan moves to CD Leganes, Real Valladolid, and Real Oviedo yielded mixed results, and he was a frustrated figure in the dressing room.
But Thibaut Courtois picked up a long-term knee injury before the 2023/24 season began, giving Lunin a window of opportunity. While Real Madrid signed Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan from Chelsea, the Ukrainian international has usurped the Spaniard to become the first-choice goalkeeper for Los Blancos this term.
Lunin has enjoyed an excellent 2023/24 campaign, keeping ten clean sheets while conceding only 19 goals in 23 appearances thus far. And with Courtois injuring his knee again, he can potentially start the 2024/25 season as the first-choice goalkeeper for Real Madrid. Meanwhile, the Merengues want to tie him to a new contract.
Set for a new contract?
The Spanish giants have been considering handing Andriy Lunin a new contract for several months. Recent reports have also claimed that the 25-year-old is open to extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu after turning his fortunes around at Real Madrid.
The report by Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the Merengues are preparing a new contract offer for the 10-cap Ukrainian international. With Lunin increasingly content at the Santiago Bernabeu, he might agree to sign the deal.
Reports have claimed that Real Madrid might sign a new goalkeeper after losing Courtois to another knee injury. But with Lunin proving his credentials, Los Blancos should invest in extending his stay and promoting a youth goalkeeper as the 25-year-old shot-stopper’s deputy until Courtois returns.
