West Ham United are pondering a fresh approach for Harry Maguire as the Hammers are confident about signing the defender.
According to Football Insider, West Ham United are set to revive their chase of Harry Maguire with a fresh approach. Manchester United might feel the need to sell the defender, who is on £190,000-a-week wages, as he enters the final year of his deal, with the Hammers intent on making their presence felt.
West Ham in fresh Harry Maguire approach
For long periods around the end of the summer window, it felt like West Ham would be Harry Maguire imminently, only for the deal to collapse. There were reports around then suggesting Manchester United had accepted an offer for the defender from the Hammers. Still, Maguire may have turned it down in favour of staying and fighting for his place.
In any case, the Manchester United star was reportedly unwilling to take a significant pay cut on his £190,000-a-week wages to join the Hammers, which may have been the reason. West Ham have rekindled their interest in Maguire, and they could soon make a formal approach for the central defender in the summer.
Maguire will enter the final year of his deal at Manchester United, which may prompt the club to consider offers from elsewhere. While the 31-year-old appears to have revived his career at the club, making 13 starts in the last 14 games he was available for, the chances of the Red Devils offering him a new deal are slim now.
Hence, the Hammers might sense an opportunity to bring the centre-back to the London Stadium, although they might have to convince him over the pay cut on his £190,000-a-week wages once more. Maguire will want a place of importance at his next club and be the first name on the team sheet. The Hammers could provide him that should he join them next summer.
West Ham are planning defensive signings
Maguire was always the option for West Ham to consider. Still, David Moyes, regardless of whether he stays here, has identified a new centre-back as the utmost priority for next season. Signing the Manchester United man might do the trick, although they are also trying for two high-quality free agents, including Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo.
The other one is Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, although the Bournemouth defender already has plenty of high-profile suitors ahead of a Bosman move in the summer. In all, while West Ham are keen to save money should they sign two free agents, they are not afraid to spend considerably on Maguire if he becomes available.
