Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among the front-runners to sign 21-year-old Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori.
According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Riccardo Calafiori is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants will dip their toes in the market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window. And they are “in the front row” to sign the 21-year-old Bologna defender.
Who is Riccardo Calafiori?
Riccardo Calafiori has established himself as one of the best young defenders in Serie A in the last few months. A native of Rome, the Italian defender spent his formative years in his homeland before graduating from the AS Roma youth division. But he rose to prominence during his stint with FC Basel.
Calafiori’s success with FC Basel helped him earn a return to Serie A, with Bologna signing him in a deal worth €4 million. He has turned out 22 times thus far for the Rossoblu, chipping in with one assist. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old has captured the attention of several high-profile clubs with his progress with Bologna.
Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna in the winter transfer window. But the Rossoblu did not want to part ways with the youngster midway through the season and did not entertain offers to sell him. However, the Premier League heavyweights remain keen on securing his services.
Tottenham Keen on Riccardo Calafiori
Tottenham’s interest in Calafiori is understandable despite signing Radu Dragusin in the winter transfer window. Ange Postecoglou also has two other top-class centre-backs in his squad, with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven forming a solid central defensive pairing. But the Tottenham manager wants the club to sell Japhet Tanganga this summer.
Tanganga’s departure will open up a spot for a centre-back, making Riccardo Calafiori a viable target for Tottenham. And the North London giants are reportedly “in the front row” to secure the youngster’s services in the summer transfer window.
But Tottenham will face stiff competition from Serie A giants like AC Milan and Juventus for Calafiori. So, it will be interesting to see if they can beat the competition to land the 21-year-old Italian defender this summer.
